Winter Daydream by Charles Bryant
This is a recent poem, written just before Christmas on a very cold December day. It speaks of parting and of the sense of the presence of the distant beloved, the haunting theme of the ferne Geliebte - one familiar in all literature as in life. The music (appropriately enough!) is the first movement of Tchaikovsky's first symphony subtitled 'Winter Daydreams' the subject of the inspiration for which was probably entirely similar to mine in this poem :)
WINTER DAYDREAM
Walking, you walk here with me, winter's air
ghostily clouded by your absent breath.
The bright low sun's intensity lays bare
the pores of things, every crack and scar
made visible in fierce presumptuous frost.
Imagination senses your calm presence
(in reality half a world away);
arm in arm; your warm hand clasping mine
together in one pocket intertwined,
familiar nestlings hidden from cold day.
So I meander, wonder; dream and scheme
how we two separates might meet and join;
communion my pensive's mind's sole theme;
tenderness our currency's one coin.
