I’m hot rodding my way at breakneck speed
from coast to coast from Broadway to Santa
Monica Boulevard and sleep on the
sand like a gypsy or American
vagabond but always with the engine

Running with the wild wind whipping around
roaring through new towns like some vacation
destination with the rag top down and
holding onto three kids before they fly
out while losing marriage #1 in

Overdrive and the engine keeps running,
top speed revved in the red, and yet lately
I have been stalled – transmission disengaged -
while the motor continues to scream in
high RPM’s as I make my own noise

Wherever I am, and I think it would
shatter the whole machine were I to put
this vehicle in gear now with what I
got going on – so what should I do but
take my heavy foot off the gas pedal?
